BBC Radio 4’s Dangerous Visions is a season of dramas exploring contemporary takes on future dystopias, inspired by the literary distinctiveness and imaginative world view of JG Ballard.

Sunday 23 June - Concrete Island by J. G. Ballard

On his way home, one Friday rush hour, bullish architect Maitland crashes his Jaguar off a motorway junction outside London. At first he seems bound to be rescued, but watched by passers-by, his attempts fail and he finds himself increasingly helpless and trapped on a strange, neglected island between the highways. Discovering that the island already has its own, marginalized inhabitants, a disturbed young woman and her co-dependent, brutish male helper, this modern day Crusoe is forced to confront himself and his new companions to construct a world in which he can survive.

Concrete stars Andrew Scott as Maitland. Directed by Mary Peate.

“Everybody was so shocked that I would be playing a bad guy three years ago; now it’s completely the opposite. One could increase one’s profile by doing more and more of that stuff, but I’ve done a lot of different sorts of stuff without a lot of scrutiny and so I know what I want to do.”

Irish actors Dervla Kirwan and Andrew Scott are to star opposite Christopher Eccleston and Ewen Bremner in a new BBC thriller series called The Fuse. The four-part series tells the story of Daniel Demoys (Eccleston), a corrupt council official who wakes up after a drunken night and realises he could be responsible for a murder.

However, a "dramatic act of redemption" leads to Demoys becoming a public hero and he embarks on a campaign to become mayor. Kirwan will play his wife, Alex, with Scott playing Dalien Bevan, the detective who becomes very interested in Demoys.

Eccleston said of The Fuse: "Bill Gallagher has written a fantastic four- episode drama about obsession, addiction and redemption."

Gallagher added: "I liked the idea of starting a story with a man who finds himself in a self-induced hell, and following him as he tries to make amends for the harm he has done. He happens to be a politician, so he has a chance to pay for his sins in his community."

Filming has begun on The Fuse and it will be shown in spring 2012.

Andrew is currently recording Cock for BBC Radio 3.

"We're also recording Mike Bartlett's successful stage play for Drama on 3. The original cast from the Royal Court production, Ben Whishaw, Katherine Parkinson, Andrew Scott and Paul Jesson, will be reunited in this very modern comedy of manners which takes a playful, candid look at one man's sexuality and the difficulties that arise when you realise you have a choice."
